Summary of the most important thing

The last chapter was about how sad Zoey was because she lost her dog called Pom Pom. She was staying at Dani’s house and her dad made them some hot chocolate with marshmallows on the top. Then a rescue worker arrived at the house and asked for Zoey. She looked up and was very excited to see him holding Pom Pom.

most important thing during a flood

Today me and others made a summary about this book called Flash Flood which we have been reading in class. It’s about the last chapter called ‘The most important thing.”

At Dani’s house, after the massive flood, Zoey was sad. It was because Pom Pom, her dog,  had disappeared. Then a rescue worker came inside and said, Is anyone here named Zoey and then a furry head popped out of the little blanket. It was Pom Pom and she ran up to Zoey for a hug. She was so happy to have her dog back safe and sound.

My Prayer Box

Today we finally finished our prayer boxes. It has really been lots of fun.My prayer box is very beautiful. If you want to learn how to make one I can tell you! First get a spare shoe box that no one is using and paint it. You can see me painting my beautiful blue sky in the photo. After painting your box you have to wait until the next day for it to dry. Then you can get a sharpie and write (your name) and prayer box.

We made so many special things to share as prayer with our families like a prayer dice, clay symbols and leaves that people can write on!

My favourite part of making my prayer box is painting and sticking things on my box and inside. I love my prayer box so much but I forgot one thing to tell you that, we even chose our favourite bible verses to write on special paper.

Today when we were all finished we had to get a partner to practice with. The first thing we did was setting up our prayer table under the canopy but when I was playing with my prayer dice Mrs. Agnew called the little ones in Room 2 to come look at what we’ve done. When they came their teacher had an Ipad in her hand to take photos. After she took a photo of John and Hosea, she came to take a picture of me and my best friend Avery but as soon as she came the wind was howling and blew my prayer mat over.  Sr Evalesi still said it was lovely and we said thank and when they left, Mrs. Bullot came.

I think my prayer box is something that I can keep forever and I think my family is going to love praying with me. I am excited.

our prayer box

For two weeks in Room 6, we painted and decorated our prayer boxes. On the first day, we made crosses using popsicle sticks and decorated them with jewels in different colours and pom poms. On the second day, we made a prayer dice. On the third day we made holy things out of clay that slowly became hard. We also made prayer leaves. The last one was the prayer cloth which I really enjoyed doing, especially drawing flowers all around it and colouring them in red and yellow. We made a little bag to  put the leaves in and we wrote verses from the bible. Then I made a poster asking our parents to pray with me. And finally, we cut up some loving words from God for our prayer box . My favorite one is the prayer cloth and the prayer that I wrote in malayalam words.

This morning I demonstrated how to set up the prayer stuff in front of the class then we went under the canopy and everyone did the same.

Finally, Sister Evalesi and all of Room 2 came to have a look at our beautiful prayer boxes.

My Payer Box

We have made some Prayer Boxes to take home to share with our families. We brought a shoe box from home and then we painted it. I decided to paint a rainbow and I really like how mine turned out.

We made a whole lot of special and holy things to put inside our boxes. First, we made a cross and I used coloured felts and some jewels to make it pretty.

Then I coloured my prayer dice and I can’t wait to use it with my family.

My favourite part was when we set up our prayer mats and all the special symbols and prayers under the canopy.  Then Sr Evalesi and the Room 2 children came to have a look.

I felt very proud and it will be fun to pray with my family.

My Astonishing word art

Today, we made word art using Cybersmart with Mr. Hughes. The first thing we did was click the insert button on Google slides and scroll down until we saw”Word art”. Then we wrote our names In the text box and pressed enter. We chose a font that suited us well. It was difficult for me to find a font because the other fonts were tempting but I chose Rubik wet paint.

The part that was kind of challenging was choosing the color. Instead of choosing the boring solid colors, we did the gradient. I chose a color that represents the Poland flag. Others did different colors with other combinations. We had to do a background and I chose a red and blue one. If we wanted, we could do format options like I did. I chose reflection and drop shadow to make it look realistic. After that, we downloaded the image as a PNG.

Different Types Of Beehives

In the wild, bees build their nest in hollow parts of trees or rocks. The earliest evidence of humans foraging for honey is found in rock paintings located in Europe and Asia. These paintings are estimated to be around fifteen-thousand years (or one hundred and fifty centuries) ago. At the start, people only used beehives for eating honey. Taking care of beehives was finally introduced when humans settled to farm animals and crop-growing.

The Egyptians finally started making hives for honeybees over five thousand years ago. Their figure was cylindrical, just like a pipe. Its design was really simple and clear – a hollow cylinder with a hole on one end paired with a detachable lid on the other. When they need the bees out of the hive, the beekeepers would use smoke in order to force the bees to leave. They detach the slab to collect the honeycomb.

The most ancient beehives ever discovered are estimated to be around three thousand years old, located in Israel. They were hollow and cylindrical, similar to the Egyptian pipes. A hole on each side for the bees to enter and exit. They were found in rooms that could fit up to three hundred of these pipes, also known as an apiary.

Word Art Wonders

Today (23rd of September), our class learnt how to create word art and what we can do to make it interesting. We went to the class site and made a copy of a presentation. The slide had a cover that used word art with different colors, fonts and gradients. The 2nd slide contained instructions on how to make our word art less boring and pop out a bit more. We all typed our name into our own slide, it turned out to be a non-interesting arial font. I changed the font to something that I found interesting and matched my personality. I picked the “gochi hand” font, the fact that the letters weren’t perfectly aligned made me like it even more. It makes me think that sometimes, a few imperfections can make something look even better. I changed the fill color of the word art, we were welcomed to make it a gradient, where one color fades into another. I chose a light pink that went into a slightly darker pink. Some others chose 2 complimentary colors (the opposite color). We added a border around the test, I used a grey-tinted pink and made the size 8 pixels. I played around with the settings and even added a small shadow to it. Here is my work:

How to create an Amazing Word art

Today, in Cybersmart we learned how to use Word art. First we had to make a copy, click on the word insert then find a button named word art. When we clicked on that button, a text box appeared at the very top. Mr. Hughes told us to write our names and use different fonts that suit our personalities. Many people designing their names were having trouble finding fonts that would suit them. It was even difficult for me to find a font that I would like.

Mr.Hughes told us we could change the color of our names by clicking the paint bucket icon and switching to gradient, then pressing the custom button. Everyone was designing their names with beautiful colors and fonts, some classmates had the same fonts with each other. After that, Mr.Hughes gave my classmates tips for different buttons, Mr.Hughes told everyone they could put a shadow by pressing formation options. Then after everyone finished, Mr.Hughes said to click file, press download then press download as PNG image and to blog.

St Patrick’s School’s Mission Day

On Friday, September the eleventh, The students and staff of St Patrick’s School participated in an event called “Mission Day”. The school raised money to support the Holy Angel’s Orphanage in India.

Each class took a different test for their sponsorship. Room one (the juniors) did a spell a-thon, practicing their knowledge on simple spelling words. Room six’s “a-thon” was about times tables and basic math. Room seven had a Te Reo a-thon, learning forty words in Te Reo Maori. Lastly, room eight did a test on New Zealand’s geography. The teacher would write the children’s score on a sponsorship form. This form is taken home by the students, where they would ask parents or relatives to donate money to the orphanage. The amount of money given depends on the score achieved by the pupil.

On Mission Day, students are allowed to wear their own clothes, but under one circumstance. The children must bring a non-perishable food item. This can include canned foods and uncooked rice or pasta. They are allowed and even encouraged to bring more than just one. Food items collected are given to St Vincent De Pauls and donated to people in need.

There are several stalls put up by the pupils where the other students and staff can buy from or participate in. Every year. There’s a specific stall put up where people can buy raffle tickets for a chance to win a sports ball or bike. A raffle ticket for a ball is fifty cents, while a ticket for a bike is one dollar. There are 6 winners for the ball and four winners for bikes. One of the stalls was selling pins and stationary. The pupils running the shop sold pencils, pens, erasers and even glue sticks with a variety of designs. Pins had images of different characters such as Sanrio, Chiikawa, etc.

One of the most popular stalls was the karaoke set in the library. Room seven and eight attended together. The students were able to pick a song and sit in front of the projector while singing into a microphone. They could go with a group or with friends.

Mission Day is a fun event for students that also raises money for those in need.

How Do Bees Communicate

Bees need communication to find good pollen for honey. Bees have 2 main types of dances to use when communicating with each other. They usually use a unique movement called the waggle dance. The waggle dance is a movement where the bee has to do the figure eight. Bees do this dance inside their hive, worker bees use the waggle dance a lot.

Worker bees tell other worker bees where to get high quality food. This way of talking was found by Karl von Frisch. Karl von Frisch was an Austrian scientist who studied animal behaviour. There is another type of dance that bees use when speaking to each other, it is also a really important movement when worker bees are trying to find food. It is called the round dance.

The round dance is where a bee uses its abdomen and moves in circles. When bees use the round dance it means food is very close by. This means when a sweet flower with nice pollen is very close to the hive, it is usually less than 25 to 50 meters away. Bees spend all their time making honey for their colony and for us. Bees are one of the most important animals in the world, without bees we wouldn’t have nice honey.

Swimming for Safety

Over the last two weeks, the whole school has been to CLM pool each day for ‘keeping ourselves safe in water’ lessons. The Juniors went first, followed by the Yr 4 – 8 boys and finally by the Yr 4 – 8 girls.

It was so much fun going on the bus there and back each day. The instructors were very patient and kind and taught us many new skills. Bernadette loved it when they had to lie on their backs with an outstretched arm, shouting “HELP!! HELP” as loudly as possible. Cassey remibnded us that after calling for help, we need to put our hands down, because our arms are heavy and will make us sink.

John enjoyed doing the mushroom drop which is how you fall into water from a boat. You roll into a ball and hold your chest and head. You wait for 5 seconds and then you will float up.

Levi also mentioned the ‘pencil drop’ which is when you cross your arms over your chest and when you jump into the water you try and make the smallest splash.

We learned how to dive down and pick up rings on the bottom of the pool and once we even swam through a hoop of seaweed.

Now that the summer is coming soon, we are very pleased because we feel more confident around water. We can have fun in it with our families.

Where are honeybee nests and what are they made of?

Honeybee nests are made of beeswax. The bees chew the beeswax and form the shape of the nest. Then, they make thousands of hexagon shapes. They are the best for sharing walls. The purpose for them is to store larva and food.

Where honeybee nests are found is in trees and human structures. Most of the time, they live in beehives made by beekeepers. Bumblebees dig into the ground and make it their home. Bees prefer elevated than on ground.

How bees change nectar into honey

How do bees communicate?

WALT: Write an explanation

                                                     How do bees communicate?

                                                                    by Lyndon

One of the most interesting ways bees communicate is using the waggle dance. When a worker bee finds a good source of food, such as flowers with lots of nectar and pollen, it can return to the hive and perform a special dance. The dance gives other bees information about where the food can be found.

The direction of the dance helps tell the other bees which way to fly. The bee also changes the dance depending on how far away the food is. A longer part of the dance can mean that the food source is farther away.

Bees also communicate using sounds and vibrations. Bees can make different sounds by moving their wings and bodies. These sounds and vibrations can give other bees information about what is happening inside the hive. Bees might use vibrations when they are working together or responding to changes in their colony.
