What an end to the term!
Today the Honu reading group shared a play they have been working on. They had a focus of expression, fluency and cooperation.
Some of the members were a bit nervous but we thought they did amazing.

This week we looked at our Hero Helpful Hemi. We learnt we can be like Helpful Hemi by sharing. Taking turns, using kind words and helping our friends when they need it. We can also be helpful by tidying up our classroom and looking after our things.

This week Matua Marc and Mrs Hawkins/Miss Bell’s maths groups have been learning about capacity. We have been using new vocabulary like empty. half full, almost full as well as learning the units of measurement for liquids, mls and cups. On Friday we got a chance to practice our skills using the water play, it was so much fun!

Te Rōpū Whakaute and Te Rōpū Wawata all got their Duffy books this week and decided to spend some time in the sensory garden, enjoying the beautiful sunshine and our new books!

Heart Zones is our learning through play time where the children get to choose how they want to play and learn. It’s a special time where they can be creative and discover things on their own.
Whether they’re building with blocks, imaginative play, putting on a show, playing with a ball, doing arts and crafts or playing with water and sand, they’re not just having fun, they’re also learning how to problem solve, work with others and practice their fine motor skills. It’s a great way to help them love learning!

This week we looked at our hero Mealtime Millie, who reminds us to eat a rainbow of food to keep our body and brain healthy and strong!

Last week we looked at our Hero Clever Kahu, who reminds us to stretch and strengthen our minds by reading, writing, creating and so much more. Tamariki explored different ways to be like Clever Kahu in the classroom. They enjoyed diving into books, sharing their writing, and expressing themselves through creative projects. We discovered that just like exercising our bodies keeps us strong and healthy, exercising our minds helps us grow our thinking, imagination, and problem solving skills.

We have been learning that it is important to move for 30 minutes each day.

Last week we began learning about Healthy Heroes. Our first Hero was Active Archie, who reminds us about the importance of physical activity and moving our bodies. Tamariki enjoyed exploring many ways to stay active, walking, biking, and swimming, as well as playing on the playground, dancing, and taking part in kapa haka.

This week in Rimu we have been exploring the concept of time. We are beginning to understand how clocks work and how we use them in our everyday lives. We practiced reading the hour hand and matching times to daily routines, such as lunchtime, playtime, and home time. The children have enjoyed playing games and making connections to their own experiences. It’s been wonderful to see their excitement as they start to recognise the importance of time in their day!

In Kōtuku our word of the week is honesty. We practiced showing honesty through a game of octopus. Following the rules in a game helps us all to have fun and be safe.
The rules of octopus are:
There are 3 taggers with bands on. They call the children to run by using something they are wearing e.g. everyone with pants on
If you are tagged you become seaweed and your feet are frozen but you can use your seaweed arms to tag people as they run past

Today we made pictures out of the rods. We have been learning about the different heights of the rods. Check out our pictures.

Today we worked on planning a statistics investigation.
We planned it out and started looking at data.

Who is your favourite football player?

During our maths Heart Zones, tamariki have been exploring different equipment such as magnetic shapes. They’ve loved using their creativity to build rockets, houses, and all sorts of amazing creations!
Our big book this week was Into The Tent. We explored making tents with chairs and blankets.

This week we have been learning about collecting data in Maths. We did a survey around who likes different kinds of books and used blocks to show what each of us liked. After we collated the information we connected the blocks together.

What do you notice? We thought sharing our data this way made it super easy to show out favourite books.
Check out our site here for more details about our learning.

Today we welcomed cohort 3.2 to Ara Tū Whakatā – Gilberthorpe School. We are so excited to have you starting your learning journey with us!
Rimu have been learning all about halving and sharing!
We have made paper pizzas and discussed how we can evenly share our ingredients onto each half of the pizza.
We also took a trip to our school sandpit where we filled up a cup of sand and shared half of that sand into another cup. There was heaps of discussion about the cups being filled evenly and we really enjoyed being outside while the rain held off!
