At the weekend the wonderful tamariki above came third in their category, a major achievement considering it was their very first time entering the competition. We are so proud of the hard work they put in, how fantastically yhey represented our school, and of course how brave they were!

Term 3 / Week 2 : Our friend from the future
Kia ora e te whānau and welcome to our Ruru class blog.
We have been learning how to write a recount.
A person from the future came to visit our classroom. He claimed he was 125 years old and from the year 3025.
He introduced himself to us. His name was Calebo Rossito. He was Mr Rossiter’s great great great great grandson.
We asked him some questions about the future. We asked him about the world, about world wars, robots, the sun, sports, video games and his personal information.
He told us there were no wars and there was peace on Earth. There are no cyborgs, but chairs follow you ready for you to sit on. He said the world looks better than now because there is no global warming. The sun has not exploded. We also found out that he likes yellow and blue. Yellow for the sun and blue for the sky. He loved eating steak, mashed potato, peas and a glass of milk.
A message came through saying he was late for dinner, so he panicked and left in his time machine.
After meeting Calebo Rossito, we feel confident about the future because the sun is still there and there is no more global warming.
Thank you for reading our blog.

ALL ABOUT SPACE! W1 T3 Inquiry
Hello everyone,
This week we have been learning about space. Earlier in the week we learnt about phases of the moon. On Thursday we conducted a science experiment. We made a rocket out of paper, and tape. We used scissors and a straw to launch it.
I enjoyed this lesson because making something is really fun! – Siyul (Year 4)
I really enjoyed this lesson because my brother liked using my rocket after school. (Ahyoung Year 4)

Matariki – Kite Flying
We had lots of fun on Thursday flying our kites to celebrate Matariki. Thanks to all the whānau
who came to celebrate with us or who made kites with your children.

Matariki art in Kōwhai
To celebrate Matariki this week the children have been making starry art. In Kōwhai, we made pictures of a starry sky using a method we learnt about called “mosaic”, where a picture is made using small geometric tiles.
This was a great way to exercise our geometry knowledge and acknowledge this awesome holiday all at once!

Time for Maths!
The children in Kōwhai have been learning about time. They have been learning about the months of the year, the days of the week, how to read the time on an analog clock and linking the things we do everyday – like reading and maths – to times of the day.

Te Rōpū Kura Pounamu’s Ball Skills
Te Rōpū Kura Pounamu are always hard at work. This week they’d like to share some of their awesome PE skills! They have been working hard to develop their throwing, catching, and rolling skills with large balls. It sure looks like lots of fun!
Te Ope Ruaraki Worm Farm
This week Te Ope Ruaraki have had the excitement of making our worm farms. Over the past week we have been learning about what worms need in order to survive and the steps we need to take to make our worm farm.
Feel free to come visit Te Ope Ruaraki to see how our worms are going!

Numicon learning
Students in Team Toitoi have really been enjoying our maths learning supported by Numicon this term. The students have been busy exploring the hands on lessons provided by Numicon. Check out some of the great work these Year 0/1 tamariki have been doing this week!

New learning for all!
Friday 23rd May was a Teacher Only Day for our Kura. Over one hundred teachers from local schools were presented with the new Mathematics curriculum which has been recently introduced, and is being implemented by Te Manu Tukutuku South Hornby School. It was a great opportunity for us, as a teaching staff, to mix and mingle, with other like minded teachers. It was a fantastic opportunity for us to develop and build on our knowledge in this area. We have exciting times ahead!

Book Week- Week 3
What a fabulous end to week 3. Throughout the week we had some special guests (teachers) come and read to us while we ate our morning tea. We ended the week by celebrating our school value, Mahi Tahi at assembly, followed by a whole-school parade on the courtyard showing off our fantastic costumes. It was a great day, and thank you to all the amazing children and parents who helped create costumes to celebrate the love for reading.
Please check out some of the photos and keep a lookout on our school’s Facebook page for more! https://www.facebook.com/southhornby/
Have a wonderful weekend, and we look forward to seeing you all for another week.

Mother’s day!
To celebrate our very special mum’s, we made “Mum Magazine’s” where we wrote what we loved most about our mums, drew some pictures and even made some coupons!
Here are some photos of just a couple of examples of our work. We hope you loved your magazine as much as we loved making them.
Happy belated Mother’s day to all our wonderful Mums!
