Effects of heat blog (Science)

Hello! Today, we have been learning about our science experiments, focusing on conduction, convection, contraction, and diffusion. We have done all 4 of these experiments, and hopefully you will learn something from this.

I enjoyed our convection experiment because it had the most action, because you would see so much diffrent things going on during this experiment.

For our conduction experiment, our aim was to observe the conduction of diffrent material for the plastic lid and a metal surface. Our aim was to determine which one would melt faster, as metal is a better conductor. The metal surface melted faster.

For our convection experiment, our aim was to observe the potassium permanganate rising in the beaker on a Bunsen burner. You would use a straw to accurately get the potassium permanganate into the correct position, and you will see the potassium permanganate rise into the water.

In our contraction experiment, our aim was to find out if an aluminum can could produce a loud bang. We placed a hot plate on a heat-proof surface and set it to the desired maximum heat. Next to it, we had a cold container of water. Once the can began to create steam, we used scissor tongs to grab the can and flipped it so it was facing downwards.

In our diffusion experiment, our aim was to find out how long it would take for the potassium permanganate to spread out to the edges of our petri dish using hot water and cold water.

The key learning was that particles are in constant, random motion and will spread out from areas of high concentration ares of low concentration.

My favorite experiment was convection. It was really fun to observe how the particles moved around with the potassium permanganate. I have finished my write-up for this experiment and would like you to review it. Let me know what I could add for next time. Click the link to have a look.

One thing I noticed during the diffusion experiment was that hot water molecules move faster than cold water molecules. This faster movement is why we saw the potassium permanganate rise more quickly in hot water.
