| Last week on our school trip we learned about the Northern War battles at Ōhaeawai and Ruapekapeka and it was actually kinda interesting to see how Māori outsmarted the British army. When we looked at Ōhaeawai, Matua Tukaha showed us where Chief Kawiti built a crazy smart pa with a thick purere tree that literally absorbed cannonballs. Then we went to Ruapekapeka which was nicknamed the “bat’s nest” because the Māori dug deep underground bunkers to survive weeks of British bombing. It was really cool standing on the actual site and learning how the Māori tricked the British by leaving the pā empty to ambush them from the bush. Seeing the trenches in real life proved that Māori engineering was way ahead of its time. |
