Last week, all the students in Room 10 had the opportunity to create a presentation to teach the students in Room 5/6 about Matariki. My friend Leisha and I worked together to design our presentation using Canva. I explored different presentation templates from a website called SlideEgg for inspiration and ideas, while Leisha researched and gathered information about Matariki. By combining our creativity and research, we created an engaging presentation that helped the younger students learn about the significance and traditions of Matariki.
Yesterday was the day we finally presented our Matariki presentations, and it was a really fun experience. We began by introducing the younger students to Matariki and explaining why it is celebrated. Then we taught them about each of the Matariki stars and what they represent. To finish, we organised a hands-on activity where the students had to memorise the positions of the stars before placing them back into their correct spots in the Matariki cluster, just like completing a puzzle.
Once they had successfully matched all the stars, they each got to design and decorate three stars of their own. This activity was surprisingly really simple but fun at the same time. My favorite part of our presentation was creating the stars and their meanings. Maybe next time our presentation could have been shorter, because I did notice that most of the kids were starting to zone out towards the end. But at least everything came out great!
