Hello readers! Today in science we made models for power stations that we’ve been researching recently. I did mine with three of my other classmates, we decided to make a hydropower station. This uses water to create kinetic energy that is transformed into electricity using a generator. It’s a renewable source of energy because it uses a source that is constantly renewed.
This was the model we made!
Where the bottle caps are is where the dam would be. The water travels down the penstock, the water flowing through turns the turbine which gives it kinetic energy. The turbine is connected to a generator (the black bottlecap on the side), which turns this kinetic energy into electrical energy. The generator brings this electricity to powerlines that bring power to people’s homes.

I think we did an alright job showing how a hydropower station would work, but next time I think we could make it look a bit more accurate to the real thing. Did you know that over 50% of NZ’s power comes from hydropower?
