In Topic 4, I learned about linear equations and how to solve them. At first, equations can look confusing because they contain letters and numbers, but once I understood the steps, they became much easier to work with. Linear equations are useful because they can help us find an unknown value when we know some other information.
A linear equation is a mathematical statement that contains an unknown, usually represented by a letter such as x. For example, an equation could be x + 5 = 12. The goal is to find the value of x that makes the equation true. In this example, x is 7 because 7 + 5 = 12.
One of the most important things I learned was that we need to keep an equation balanced. Whatever operation we do to one side of the equation, we also need to do to the other side. For example, if we have x + 6 = 15, we can subtract 6 from both sides. This leaves us with x = 9. This is similar to having a balance scale because both sides need to stay equal.
I also learned how to solve equations that involve multiplication and division. For example, if 3x = 18, we divide both sides by 3 to get x = 6. When an equation has more than one operation, I have to carefully work through each step until the unknown is by itself.
Another useful skill was checking my answer. After solving an equation, I can substitute my answer back into the original equation to see if both sides are equal. This helps me find mistakes and make sure my answer is correct.
Overall, learning about linear equations has helped me understand how algebra works and how unknown values can be found using different operations. I found that the main thing is to take my time, keep both sides balanced and show each step clearly. Even though linear equations seemed challenging at first, practising them made them much easier to understand.
