Making a ngatu/tapa cloth

We learned how to make a ngatu-tapa cloth during Tongan Language Week. It made me feel proud and happy to be learning about my culture. It was fun to learn how to make a Ngatu and now I know I can do one at home.

These are the instructions:

Materials:

-Brown paper

-Pencil and ruler

-Black and brown permanent markers

-Earth toned felts

 

Procedure:

  1. Crumple the the brown paper
  2. Fold the paper into 4 quadrants
  3. With a ruler and black felts go over the lines
  4. Research the tapa patterns
  5. Draw a pattern in each square
  6. Outline and colour with black felts
