Technology blog recap (September 2nd, 2026)
Greetings to my twenty seventh edublog recapping yesterday’s TECH aka Technology, if you hadn’t read any other blogs about Tech. TECH is a weekly event exclusively for Year 7 & 8s where it involves various of different classes at PI (Papakura Intermediate) including cooking, art, hard materials, & steam. You are chosen in any class in your own group line, it really isn’t optional.
At TECH in Steam class, we were working on and building a hypothetical cage that is fitted to capture a small dangerous extraterrestrial (alien) creature who escaped from its previous cage. The cage should be wide in width but small in length and has to be made out of strong resistant metal designed to withstand a powerful bite from this creature, in order to open the cage safely without getting you or anyone else hurt, we have to formulate an idea to open the door well staying a safe distance back. Maybe a automatic device or something else.
Me and my group were divided into two separate subgroups each consisting of five or more people, depending on how many students were present, but our Steam teacher picked who gets to go in which group and I was picked for the more quiet group well the other group was probably way larger than us and louder but they have the smarter students in it so I thought to myself that this may be a fast loss for my group but that was what I initially thought.
The result was actually very much different and I was quite happy with the outcome of our teamwork, Haji was actually revolutionary as he assisted us very much and made the cages framework alongside me, he also had the idea to make the cage to drive with four wheels installed below it so it can move and drive without us having to grab it and hold it to transport it. The cage framework was accurate to the concept plan and it is made out of strong bite resistant metal (plastic safe metal in real life) and even has a functioning door on the side of the cage which can be opened and closed but we still are working on a automatic device to make the door open and close on it’s own.
The cage framework is each connected via red coloured objects which connects each metal pole, helping us to get our length and width accurate and probably identical. The working door was also connected to red connecting objects on the top of the metal pole door but that was only to connect, for the door to actually open and close, we needed another required object which we overlooked during building the actual cage, it was a grayish blue object that bared a resemblance to a cog wheel but miniature and it is intended for objects and creations required to move.
The wheels weren’t actually needed on the concept plan of the cage, it was just an idea by Haji and we decided to use it as well as the other team, it looks like students before us really liked using wheels on their creation projects that do not require wheels as mentioned by our Steam teacher and Haji really loved using wheels so I guess he used it regardless. Our functioning door was also entirely made up by us but still obviously needed but we need a device to open it and close it so I am guessing my group already made that since I was absent for the next TECH session.
The other group though also installed metal doors similarly to us, I do not really know if they did it before us or after us but I would assume that they did it after us but the door was quite functional and their cage was long and unfinished, they also installed wheels separated wide as I already mentioned. I was really surprised how our quiet group managed to finish before the smarter larger group but I wasn’t here on the next session so they probably finished their cage, maybe better.
The next session involved electrical things and the thing to make the cage open or close automatically and move on it’s own. But I did not get to experience the next session nor blog about it, so if you’re wondering what happens next, check out other people in Steam’s blogs. Thank you for reading my Tech recap blog and what you will likely be experiencing if you ever went to Steam class. In summary, we built a cage designed to capture a alien creature and keep it in without it ever escaping again.
Haere rā!
