Our Lunar experiment 🌑

Did you know that there are eight phases of the lunar moon?

In Kea we have been learning about the different moon phases.

First, we sat down on the mat and watched a few videos. After the videos we split into our writing groups and did the experiment.

The things we needed were a glue stick, pencil, white A4 paper, and black paper, scissors, and a stapler.

We sat down and started our experiment. I cut the black paper around the drawn circle. Next we traced the circle onto one of the pieces of white paper and cut it out. After, we glued the black circle onto the white paper (the other one, not the one we cut), and stapled the two white papers together.

Finally I went to paint the moon cycles around the outside, until someone’s paint fell onto mine and it was ruined! I made a second one and it worked. I felt relief. We all sat down and went to play. It was a fun experiment and a really cool one.

Tuakana-teina

On Monday Kea  did a learning experiment with Takahe. My buddies were Siva and Nate. We did some art and cooking.

First, I did art and I was colouring a star. We also had to draw stars with chalk and a wordsearch.  I did a wordsearch There were only eight words to find  then when I was done I coloured a star so we can make it in to a charm.

Next, we went to the kitchen and I made butter with rosemary. First we had to add cream to a jar with a pinch of salt and then add rosemary after that you have to tightly close the led of the jar then shake until you see the water spilt from the butter.

After, that we ate bread with butter it was so fun I was happy even siva said it too my favourite part was shaking the jar.

Getting together with Takahe

¨Hello Kea kids, today you are going to partner up with Takahe kids today and experience great activities.¨ Mrs Venkat said as she turned to the board, the board had options of choices with activities we could do. ¨Some of you guys will stay here in the old library and some will come with me into the kitchen. There are activities to do, word search, colouring in the gem stars and chalk. There is a paper with all the Matariki stars written on it and you have to draw the Matariki stars with chalk outside.¨ We also talked about Tuakana-Teina which means when a young person and an older person come together.

Half of the Kea and Takahe kids split off and went to the kitchen. I stayed in the old library with Whaea Ocea. We had to choose our buddies but there were no kids left so I went with Antonia and her buddy Siva. We went to do the word search first. After we went to colour in the star gems, there were heaps of options of stars and I chose one and started colouring. I put some gems and glitter on it to make it decorated then I went to go help Siva to finish off her star.

After that it was our turn to go to the kitchen. While Siva was drawing the Matariki stars me and Antonia went inside to make rosemary butter.

The equipment we used was:
Spoon
Jar
Our ingredients were:
Cream ½
Pinch of salt
Rosemary

We first poured cream into the jar halfway. Secondly, we put a little salt inside the jar. Then we put a little rosemary inside the jar. Lastly we had to shake the jar until its shaped into butter. After it was finally shaped, Mrs Venkat spread it onto the bread. We all had a chance to taste and it was amazing because the texture of the bread was great.

Overall, it was fun and exciting and my favourite part was when we had to shake the jar to make butter!

We went on the learning slides and asked a question about the planets. after all of it then we went to our writing groups. We got into a circle and Miss Ashley asked us “who wants to be the sun?”Robby said me “me! me! me!” Miss Ashley picked  Robby to be the sun and he stood in the middle of the circle. Next all the other kids became the other planets, I was Saturn . And I had to go in a circle over again I had to go slow cause Saturn is a long way and the six planets and it mean it travels as we drew the planets.

Did you know the sun is 15,000 degrees celsius and the sun is a giant star made of hydrogen gas. And did you know the Earth takes 1 year to orbit the sun. For Earth that takes 365 days. Mercury takes 88 Earth days and Venus takes 225 Earth days. Mars takes 687 Earth days and Jupiter has 4,333 Earth days.
